Academic Advising

Advising and careful academic planning are essential to a successful undergraduate experience.

After you have completed 58 credit hours and achieved a 2.0 GPA, you should complete the process of moving your student file from the Undergraduate Advising Services Center, or from the department in which you are currently enrolled, to the MDS Program. We are located in 210Q Armstrong Hall. Students who major in Multidisciplinary Studies should enroll in the Orientation to Multidisciplinary Studies Course (MDS199) as soon as they have declared the MDS major.

Once you have transferred your folder to the MDS Program, you will be assigned a faculty advisor based on your surname:

You should expect to meet with your advisor at least once a semester, i.e., during WVU pre-registration for the next semester. Your advisor will work with you in selecting appropriate courses. It is very important that you come prepared to your scheduled advising appointment. Before meeting with your faculty advisor to pre-register, you are expected to have already given serious thought to the courses you would like to take the next semester. This includes drafting a tentative class schedule with attention to the course requirements for your chosen minors. No students may pre-register for courses without meeting their faculty advisor and receiving their term PIN.

Each October students will pre-register for the following Spring courses. In March students will pre-register for their Summer and Fall courses.

Students will receive an email from their faculty advisor concerning priority registration at least one week prior to scheduling pre-advising appointments. Please follow all instructions in this email to ensure that the pre-advising process operates smoothly and efficiently.
