Emma Cannon
“Being in the MDS program helped me focus on my creativity.... I began learning new skills and went a different direction in my career. This was the best decision because I absolutely love what I do!”
I am Emma Cannon, and I majored in the MDS program at WVU, focusing on marketing, strategic social media, and entertainment media. I enjoyed being in the MDS program at WVU because it allowed me to be creative in selecting my own path of study. I work in the marketing field and knew I wanted to major in that, but it felt too narrow, and I wanted to expand my knowledge to make myself a more desirable candidate to a future employer. I am aware that the marketing industry is constantly evolving, and I wanted to grow with it and be adaptable in various situations. Being in this program has encouraged me to adopt a multidisciplinary approach to my work and education. Multidisciplinary studies involves combining multiple disciplines to solve a problem from more than one perspective, and recognizing that not everything is a one-way issue or has only one solution has broadened my understanding of how to solve complex problems. The MDS program has helped me learn the value of working on a team and how important it is to come at issues with more than one approach.
Capstone Externship Experience
For my MDS 489 Capstone course, I had the wonderful opportunity to work with the non-profit organization, The Pantry Plus More. This experience enabled me to apply an interdisciplinary approach to help the organization address its challenges, and I created relationships with the other volunteers. Since completing this externship, I have volunteered with The Pantry Plus More again and plan to continue. During the course of my studies, I made some changes in my job and took on new responsibilities.
Being in the MDS program helped me focus on my creativity and not be afraid to try new things in my profession. I began learning new skills and went a different direction in my career. This was the best decision because I absolutely love what I do! My career goal is to continue gaining experience in video editing and production, and to push myself outside of the boundaries. I plan to continually refine my skills and integrate various methods to benefit my future career.
